NVIDIA & OpenAI Announce The Biggest AI Infrastructure Project In History

NVIDIA and OpenAI have announced that they have partnered to develop what is reportedly the greatest AI infrastructure project in human history, ushering in a new era in computing. The partnership, which was unveiled at NVIDIA's Santa Clara headquarters, unites NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang with OpenAI's Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, two of the industry's most prominent figures, to construct an unprecedented $100 billion infrastructure that will drive the next wave of AI innovation. A $100 Billion Leap Toward The AI Industrial Revolution.

NVIDIA's pledge to invest $100 billion in OpenAI marks the beginning of what Huang referred to as "the AI Industrial Revolution" as well as the largest technology partnership ever tried. The two companies intend to expand AI processing power beyond all previous expectations by constructing 10 gigawatts of computing capacity.

“The computing demand is going through the roof,” said Huang. “This partnership is about building an AI infrastructure that enables AI to go from the labs into the world.”

This growing demand has been fueled by OpenAI's ChatGPT, which is already in use by hundreds of millions of people globally. The project provides "the fuel we need to drive improvement, to make better models, and to deliver what the world is demanding" according to Sam Altman.

Scaling Beyond Limits: From Stargate To Super Infrastructure.

This project builds upon OpenAI's previous Stargate project, which was a multi-partner partnership that involved SoftBank, Microsoft, and Oracle to create extensive computing networks. However, Altman acknowledged that even those initiatives understated the demand for AI around the world.

“There’s no partner but NVIDIA that could do this at this kind of scale and speed,” said Altman. “Every step along the way, we realized we didn’t set our sights big enough.”

With a projected 700–800 million users of ChatGPT, OpenAI is growing faster than any previous product launch. Greg Brockman stated that the collaboration now amounts to "a billion-times boost in processing capacity" in comparison to the period in 2016 when Jensen Huang personally delivered OpenAI's first NVIDIA platform.

Building The World’s Brain.

The magnitude of this undertaking is astounding; it is comparable to four to five million NVIDIA GPUs running a global "super brain." This kind of computing has the power to revolutionize entire sectors, including robots, energy, education, and medicine.

“We’re talking about infrastructure that could cure cancer or provide free education to every person on Earth,” said Altman. “No one wants to choose between those — the answer is simply more capacity.”

NVIDIA’s Huang added perspective: “This is additive to everything already announced. It’s a monumental engineering project — larger than the Apollo program — and it will power computing experiences for everyone, every day.”

A Global, AI-Powered Future.

The partnership goes well beyond the boundaries of the United States. According to Huang, there will soon be AI infrastructure on every continent, with new facilities slated to be built in Southeast Asia, Europe, and other regions.

“The world should be built on the American tech stack — chips, infrastructure, models, and applications — and the United States must lead in every layer,” Huang emphasized. “But we must also diffuse this capability as fast as possible, because the world is racing to bring AI to everyone.”

From Cloud to Edge: AI Everywhere.

The two businesses see AI operating on edge devices, such as smartphones and driverless cars, in addition to large data centers. This distributed future is reflected in OpenAI's new GPT-OSS paradigm, which can run on both PCs and smartphones.

“For chatting and everyday tasks, AI will run locally,” explained Altman. “But for major research, discovery, and large-scale reasoning — curing cancer, designing materials, solving energy — the big data centers will remain essential.”

Talent, Policy, and the Human Factor.

Both companies also addressed the human side of this massive transformation. Huang highlighted immigration as a cornerstone of innovation:
“We want all the brightest minds to come to the United States. Immigration is the foundation of the American dream — and we represent that dream.”

Altman added that OpenAI’s next major focus will be on solving the unprecedented infrastructure challenge, coordinating the chips, power, and physical data centers required to sustain AI’s exponential growth.

From Cloud to Edge: AI Everywhere.

Both CEOs believe that this project is just the beginning of the rapid advancement of AI, which will soon move from generative models to reasoning and, eventually, thinking systems.

“We’re literally going to connect intelligence to every application, every device,” said Huang. “This is the first 10 gigawatts — and it’s just the start.”

Altman echoed the sentiment: “People underestimate how capable AI already is. With the scale of this infrastructure, we’ll see breakthroughs that we can’t even imagine yet.”
